Study Finds Climate Shift Threatens California
New York Times
, Aug. 17A scientific study released on Monday presents an alarming view of climate changes in California, finding that by the end of the century rising temperatures could lead to a sevenfold increase in heat-related deaths in Los Angeles and imperil the state's wine and dairy industries. The study, published in the online version of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, offers the most detailed projection yet of changes in California as temperatures rise around the world because of building concentrations of heat-trapping gases. The study was conducted by 19 scientists from several universities and research institutions, including the Scripps Institution of Oceanography.

For Art History Scholars, Illumination Is a Click Away
New York Times, Aug. 14—A vast digital library of world art has gone online with its first 300,000 images. The project -- known as ARTstor and financed by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation -- eventually could revolutionize the way art history is taught and studied. It is available for non-profit institutions only. (Quote by Marguerite A. Keane, an adjunct lecturer at the University of California, San Diego.)

Muslims Worship Under Watchful Eye of FBI

North County Times, Aug. 16—
What if your religion had been taken hostage by politics? What if the very name of your faith has come to be associated with terror and death?  The faithful who come to worship at the Masjid Al-Ittehad in Vista have to face those associations. On some days, while congregators share a meal and fellowship, members of the mosque leadership sit in the building's small office and politely answer questions posed by agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigation. No one protests. No one complains. No one mentions that the free exercise clause of the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution prohibits government interference with a person's right to practice their religion. (Quote by John Evans, professor of sociology at UC San Diego.)
