Unhealthy Ads Target Black Women
Fox News, Aug. 19 -- With racial health gaps persisting in the U.S., a new study shows that media content may contribute to the problem. The study, published in BMC Public Health, tracked health-related ads in 12 magazines that represented a mix of mainstream publications and those geared toward minority audiences. "There were dramatic differences" in the health-related ads in mainstream and minority magazines, says Georgia Robins Sadler, a clinical professor of surgery at UCSD and community outreach director of the Rebecca and John Moores UCSD Cancer Center. Newsweek Names UCSD as 'Hottest' in Science Field

Scientists Link Genetic Pathway to Development of Hearing
Innovations Report, Aug. 19 -- Scientists are one step closer to understanding the genetic pathway involved in the development of hearing. New research findings, published online this week in the journal Nature Genetics, detail how sensory hair cells in the ear -- the cells largely responsible for hearing -- develop unique shapes that enable the perception of sound. (Authors of the paper include Jianbo Wang and Anthony Wynshaw-Boris from the UCSD School of Medicine) More
