UCSD Gets $12 Million Donation For Medical
Research

Aug. 19-The University of California, San Diego has
received a $12 million donation to aid in biomedical research
focusing on childhood diseases. The gift is from the Leichtag
Family Foundation, a longtime San Diego philanthropic organization
whose founders, Lee and Toni Leichtag, own M.D. Pharmaceuticals,
Inc.

San Diego Channel, 10 News, Aug. 18-Chemists
at University of California, San Diego said
they have developed an inexpensive way to detect molecules,
using a conventional compact disc player. The method, detailed
in a paper appearing in an advance online edition of the journal
Organic and Biomolecular Chemistry, provides scientists with
a cheap way to screen for molecular interactions and a potentially
less expensive alternative to medical diagnostic tests.
