Stitching Together a Global System of Systems
Science Magazine, Aug. 18—A pledge last year by the leaders of the eight richest nations to create a comprehensive, continuous, and coordinated system of global observation systems has made little progress, and there are huge obstacles in its path. (Quote by Charles Kennel, director of Scripps Institution of Oceanography.)

Fisher Gets Drake Medal
San Diego Union-Tribune, Aug. 18—Robert L. Fisher, a geologist emeritus at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, has been awarded the inaugural Drake Medal by the General Bathymetric Chart of the Oceans organization. The medal, awarded at Woods Hole, Mass., in July at a ceremony hosted by the National Academies, was specifically created to honor Fisher. Fisher has spent the past six decades mapping the sea floor, making contributions to understanding sea floor trenches and the composition, crustal structure and topography underlying the Pacific and Indian oceans. He has organized and led 16 major expeditions since 1957.

Free Clinic in Encanto Blocked
San Diego Union-Tribune, Aug. 20—A San Diego organization that trains health professionals is giving up on its plan to open a free clinic in an Encanto church after facing objections from some community leaders. The San Diego Health and Faith Alliance had proposed to open a training clinic at St. Rita's Catholic Church in the southeast neighborhood of Encanto, which has been designated by the state and federal government as a medically underserved area. After several hours of heated debate, the Encanto Neighborhoods Community Planning Group on Monday refused to support the permit the alliance needed to move forward with the plan. The alliance's participants include UCSD of Medicine, UCSD School of Pharmacy, Point Loma Nazarene University School of Nursing and USD Marriage and Family Therapy Program and Clinical Pastoral Education Program of San Diego.

Giddens Couldn't Be Happier if She’d Won
San Diego Union-Tribune, Aug. 19—To see the look of excitement on her face, you'd have thought she was a little kid again and the family had just arrived at the world's coolest water park on the hottest day of the year. Except when Rebecca Giddens went home, she'd be wearing a silver medal from the Olympic Games. The grandeur around her at Olympic Canoe/ Kayak Center was not lost on Giddens, 26, a San Diego resident who obviously did not feel as if she'd lost to gold-medalist Elena Kaliska, a good friend from Slovakia. (Quote by Eric Giddens, a graduate student at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography.)

Anesthesiology Monopoly?
Tallahassee Democrat, Aug. 18—The business practices of several Tallahassee health-care providers are under scrutiny as the state investigates the possibility of illegal restraints on competition for anesthesiology services. The Florida Attorney General's Office confirmed Thursday it is looking into potential violations of state antitrust law. It has issued eight subpoenas in the case. (Quote by William Mazzei M.D., clinical professor of anesthesiology at the UC San Diego Medical Center.)
