Doctors, Other Specialists Go to Damaged Areas
San Diego Union-Tribune, Aug. 31 -- Dr. Irving "Jake" Jacoby, UCSD Disaster Control Officer is serving as leader of a 30-member team assigned to Baton Rouge, La., to assist victims of Hurricane Katrina. The group from hospitals in San Diego County was temporarily assigned to an assembly area near the football stadium at Louisiana State University while officials sorted out priorities. More

Chemistry Education in 2015 Will Demand Lessons in Communication and Teamwork, Scientists Say
Chronicle of Higher Education, Aug. 31 -- Future chemistry students will need to learn more than just chemical concepts and laboratory skills, scientists said Tuesday at the national meeting of the American Chemical Society. More than ever before, students will need to learn to communicate with people from diverse backgrounds and work in multidisciplinary teams. "The classroom in 2015 is going to be much more diverse than it ever has been," said Marye Anne Fox, a chemist and the Chancellor of the University of California at San Diego. Students need to learn to work with people from diverse cultures, she and other speakers emphasized, and faculty members need to teach students with varying learning styles. More

Chemists and Chief Executives, Too
InsideHigherEd.com, Aug. 22 -- Four university presidents and chancellor's, including UCSD Chancellor Marye Anne Fox, participated in a panel discussion Wednesday at the American Chemical Society's annual meeting on the future of education. Fox emphasized the need for colleges to do a better job encouraging women, members of minority groups, and others underrepresented in science and technology fields to enter those disciplines. More

Voice of San Diego, Aug. 31 - A 30-member disaster medical assistance group, sponsored by the San Diego-based International Relief Teams and UCSD Medical Center, arrived in Baton Rouge, La., yesterday where they will dispense antibiotics, vaccines and other medications to prevent disease outbreaks. More

Restoration of Kelp Described as Successful
Orange County Register, Aug. 31 -- A popular effort to grow giant kelp off the Southern California coast is succeeding, organizers say. But Marine ecologist Paul Dayton at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography has raised scientific questions about the project. He says human efforts to grow the marine algae have little or no effect in the long run. More
