Modern Roller Coasters Could Be Bad For Heart, Study Says
Los Angeles Times, Aug. 15 -- A new generation of faster, twistier roller coasters can make the heart race up to 155 beats per minute and spur dangerous changes to heart rhythm in some people, according to a study released Tuesday. The study may not reveal the true prevalence of cardiovascular problems prompted by roller coasters because it looked at only a small group of riders, cautioned Dr. Ori Ben-Yehuda, who directs the coronary care unit at the UCSD Medical Center and was not involved in the study. Baseball Makes a Pitch in Israel
Los Angeles Times, Aug. 15 – On a sun-baked August afternoon, the paid, mostly foreign, players are the draw in the latest game of the Israel Baseball League, which seeks to plant professional baseball in the Middle East. Rafael Bergstrom, a 25-year-old pitcher UCSD graduate from Pacific Grove, Calif., near Monterey, and one of the stars of the Bet Shemesh squad, says it is a thrill to be paid to play ball six days a week. UC President Didn't Bail, He Was Pushed Out, Sources Say
San Francisco Chronicle, Aug. 15 -- Members of the University of California's governing Board of Regents, unhappy with what they saw as persistent management problems in the UC system, pushed university President Robert Dynes into announcing his resignation this week, sources involved in the move said Tuesday. Dynes, a former physicist and UCSD chancellor, was in over his head at the top of the 10-campus system. More
