Manny Farber, Iconoclastic Film Critic and Artist, Dies at 91
The New York Times, Aug. 19 -- Manny Farber, a painter whose spiky, impassioned film criticism waged war against sacred cows like Orson Welles and elevated American genre-movie directors like Howard Hawks and Sam Fuller to the Hollywood pantheon, died on Monday at his home in Leucadia, Calif. He was 91. In 1970, Mr. Farber began teaching film at UCSD, from which he retired in 1987. More

Ship Emissions: Sizing Up a Big Problem
Christian Science Monitor, Aug. 20 -- Those who go down to the sea in ships – or go to see them in port – may soon be able to breathe easier. UCSD scientists have made the first measurements of ship emissions involving particles less than a millionth of a meter in size. They say it’s an important step in establishing and monitoring the effectiveness of air-pollution regulations for ships. More
