Manny Farber's Rough Criticism
The Wall Street Journal, Aug. 26 -- The American critic and painter Manny Farber, who died last week at the age of 91, was a maddening original. Never anything less than his own man, he wasn't smooth and didn't try to be. The slangy aggression of his paragraphs and the shifting perspectives of his canvases were attempts to keep alive the fast, sidewalk style of heated argument in which they were conceived. Farber taught at UCSD from 1970 to 1987. More

Barack Obama has a slight lead in the national polls and is generally favored to win the presidential election this fall. Even so, given the enormous advantages of the Democratic Party this year, Obama should be way ahead of Sen. John McCain in the polls but he is not. Port is More Important Than Many May Realize
San Diego Union-Tribune, Opinion, Aug. 24 -- In a recent column, I mentioned how Texas oil billionaire T. Boone Pickens was using the California initiative process to float a referendum to provide subsidies for natural gas use that would probably end up providing some pretty handsome benefits for his natural gas company. (Quotes UCSD political scientist Steve Erie) More
