Is Your Doctor in Denial?
The Washington Post, Aug. 28 -- When doctors fail to recognize a patient's symptoms as drug side effects, more than that patient's care is put at risk. Because the doctor makes no "adverse event report" to the Food and Drug Administration, the regulatory agency may underestimate the problem, and other doctors and patients may assume the drug is safer than it is. Researchers from UCSD had been investigating the side effects of statins when they noticed the problem. More
Obesity as a Social Disease? How Friendship Could Be Fattening
Voice of America, Aug. 28 -- Researchers at Harvard and UCSD say they have found that fatness can spread from person to person in social groups. When one person gains weight, close friends often gain weight, too. The study was published last month in the New England Journal of Medicine. More

San Diego Union-Tribune, Aug. 28 – UCSD’s Scripps Institution of Oceanography has won a share of a $97.7 million contract to build a network of satellite-linked buoys and underwater research probes for the National Science Foundation's Ocean Observatories Initiative. More
