Problems No Problem for Siemens Winners
USA Today, Dec. 6-A home-schooled 16-year-old from San Diego won a $100,000 scholarship for his solutions to a centuries-old math problem Monday in the Siemens Westinghouse Competition in Math, Science and Technology. Michael Viscardi's research on the Dirichlet Problem, formulated in the 19th century, may help describe how air moves around wings, how heat moves through objects and how magnetic fields surround stars. Viscardi worked for six months, guided by Peter Ebenfelt of UCSD, from whom he took calculus lessons as an eighth-grader. More
