$328-Billion
Spending Bill Caps House Year
Los Angeles Times, Dec. 9-The House
wrapped up legislative business for 2003 Monday by passing a
$328-billion spending bill that is a testament to how much power
President Bush has wielded over Congress this year. The bill,
which was approved, 242 to 176, sticks to the budget guidelines
set by Bush and, over the objection of many other Republicans,
clears the way for controversial rules to curb overtime pay
and allow big media companies to get even bigger. (Quote by
Gary Jacobson, a political scientist at UC
San Diego.)

A Weapon
in the War on Wrinkles
Copley News Service, Dec. 8-After
reviewing the results of several clinical trails of Artefill,
one of several new minimally invasive wrinkle fillers on the
market, a review panel recommended that the Food and Drug Administration
approve it for all facial wrinkles except crow's-feet or the
colored portion of the lips. Artefill was invented by Gottfried
H. Lemperle M.D., a clinical professor in the University
of California, San Diego's Division of Plastic Surgery.

Canadian
Consulate is Back in Town
San Diego Union-Tribune, Diane Bell
Column, Dec. 9-Naomi Kazmar, 7½ months
pregnant, was in the right place at the right time. As a nurse
at the UCSD Medical Center, she had just assisted
in a baby's delivery when her placenta ruptured and Kazmar
herself needed an obstetrician. Not to worry. Her colleagues
went back into action and quickly delivered a 3 lb., 7 oz. baby
by Caesarean. Baby Zachary and mom were reported to be doing
very well yesterday.
