Lost? Hiding? Your Cellphone Is Keeping Tabs
New York Times, Dec. 21-Driven by worries about safety, the need for accountability, and perhaps a certain "I Spy" impulse, families and employers are adopting surveillance technology once used mostly to track soldiers and prisoners. New electronic services with names like uLocate and Wherify Wireless make a very personal piece of information for cellphone users - physical location - harder to mask. (Quote by Larry Smarr, director of Cal-(IT)2 at UCSD.)

A Tense Border's More Peaceful Past
The New York Times, Dec. 23-The 110-mile-long wadi today is the tightly controlled boundary between the Negev of Israel and southern Jordan. The sparsely populated and largely undeveloped region is an object of increasing fascination among scholars who pursue what could be called the archaeology of borderlands. (Quote by Thomas E. Levy M.D., an archaeologist at the University of California at San Diego.)

State Spending Cuts Threaten College-Prep Outreach Programs
San Diego Union-Tribune, Dec. 23-Last week, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger invoked emergency powers to unilaterally cut spending - nearly $54 million from state public universities, $50 million from college grants, and $41 million from welfare. At UCSD, officials say the pinch to outreach this year has been dramatic because of the recent cuts. The Preuss School, a sixth-through-12th-grade charter school located on the UCSD campus, also has weathered cuts in the past two years.

Concert Series gets Fresh Start at Museum
San Diego Union-Tribune, Dec. 23-After being silent for all of 2003, the envelope-shredding Fresh Sound Concert Series will return next month in an elegant new home - the San Diego Museum of Art. Founded in 1995 by Spruce Street Forum owner Bonnie Wright, the annual Fresh Sound series distinguished itself by presenting cutting-edge music by uncompromising artists. (Quote by UCSD music professor George Lewis.)

San Diego Biotech Firm's Diagrams Provide Direction in Battle against Disease
San Diego Union-Tribune, Dec. 23-Few outside the laboratory paid attention recently when the San Diego biotech Structural Genomix found a way to build a three-dimensional diagram of the microscopic protein that, when mutated, causes cystic fibrosis. (Quote by Arnie Rhinegold, an expert in X-ray crystallography at the University of California, San Diego.)

Between Rock, Hard Place
Electronic Engineering Times, Dec. 22-Static timing analysis is one of the pilings upon which the whole edifice of modern IC design has been erected. But this vital technique itself rests upon assumptions that may no longer hold water. As papers at the recent ICCAD conference in San Jose, Calif., indicated, those assumptions are rapidly being swept away by an irresistible current of change. At stake is the very ability of design teams to complete ambitious chip designs. (Quote by Andrew Kahng, a professor of computer science at the University of California, San Diego.)

What's in a Name?
Pittsburg Post-Gazette, Dec. 23-Medical terms can often seem unfamiliar, if not intimidating. But if you examine how they came into use, they can also be downright educational. (Quote by William S. Haubrich M.D., of the University of California at San Diego.)

Project puts Teens Online for Weight Control
San Diego Union-Tribune, Dec. 22-About 60 12-to-17-year-olds will be chosen for a 16-week research project to begin in February in conjunction with the San Diego-based Center for Eating and Weight Disorders. Angela Celio, a doctoral student at UCSD who designed the study, is recruiting overweight participants from the San Diego area.
