Putting a Human Face on 'It'
Los Angeles Times, Dec. 17 -- Technology writers P.J. Huffstutter and Alex Pham report on the creation of the all-digital character Gollum who stars in part two of the "The Lord of the Rings"
Trilogy. The production team relied on theories developed by Henrik Wann Jensen, an assistant computer science and engineering professor at UCSD’s Jacobs School of Engineering, to create the realistic look of human skin.

Gompers, UCSD Partnership Offers Online Tutoring
San Diego Business Journal, Dec. 2-8 Issue -- UCSD’s Student Educational Advancement Division provides an online distance tutoring program to Gompers Secondary School in San Diego. Thirty-one Webcam computers were installed at Gompers, which enables students to see, hear, and to communicate in writing with UCSD undergrad students who acted as tutors. The Webcam program is made possible by a $1.4 million grant from a federally funded college preparatory initiative for low-income students.

El Nino winds up for precipitation punch to the region
San Diego Union Tribune, Dec. 18 – William Patzert, research oceanographer at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, predicts San Diego will get about 18 inches of rain this season, 80 percent above normal. Dan Cayan, director of the Climate Research Division of Scripps Institution of Oceanography, said Patzert’s rainfall prediction might be a bit high.

Cal Western, UCSD agree to share resources
