Lung Cancer Vaccine May Offer Hope for Patients
KPBS, Dec. 10 -- There is no cure for advanced lung cancer. Patients usually die within a year of being diagnosed. But there could be some hope on the horizon. A San Diego biotech company has developed a vaccine it hopes will extend the lives of lung cancer patients. The vaccine has shown promise in early tests. It's now in the final phase of clinical trials at the UCSD Medical Center. More

Zacharon Aspires to Create a New Class of Drugs, Glycan-Blockers
Xconomy, Dec. 10 -- Most drugs act by interfering with signaling proteins in cells or receptors on cell surfaces. San Diego-based Zacharon Pharmaceuticals has a different idea, by trying to interrupt the complex carbohydrates known as glycans, that can alter the function of proteins. Zacharon got its start in 2004, founded by Charles Glass, a former scientist at Johnson & Johnson Pharmaceutical Research Insitute in La Jolla, CA, and Jeff Esko, a researcher at UCSD. More
