Hospitals: Poor Will Be Abandoned Under UCSD Plan
NBC San Diego, Feb. 3-UCSD Medical Center announced controversial plans Thursday to move its entire inpatient hospital to La Jolla. The move is facing strong opposition from other local hospitals in the area, which say they will be forced to absorb about 125,000 underinsured patients per year if UCSD leaves. UCSD officials disagree, saying the plan also calls for changes at the Hillcrest facility -- including a larger emergency room, a 23-hour observation site and more preventative-care services -- that will better allow them to serve the poor. (Quotes by UCSD's physician in chief, Dr. Thomas McAfee, Chief Executive Officer of UCSD Medical Center, Richard Liekweg and UCSD emergency room director, Dr. Gary Vilke.) More
