Study Shows Diversity is an Advantage
Epoch Times (U.K.), Feb. 6 -- The specialized monitoring of forests on two major continents has revealed that nature promotes diversity by selecting for less commonplace species as trees mature. Thirty-three ecologists from twelve countries produced results which demonstrate that diversity has important ecological implications for tropical forest survival. The findings were published in last week's issue of the journal Science. (Cites Christopher Wills, a biologist at UCSD who headed the study). More
Latino Professor Discusses
Theme of His Newest Book
North County Times, Feb. 6 -- Being the first person to go to college in his family was quite an accomplishment for UCSD professor Jorge Mariscal, who also directs the Chicana/o- Latina/o Arts and Humanities Program. Despite the struggles to accomplish that, he extended his list of achievements by obtaining a Ph.D and later becoming a published author. In his newest book, "Brown-Eyed Children of the Sun: Lessons from the Chicano Movement, 1965-1975," Mariscal talks about the quest for equal rights and economic justice. More
State Tries to Get a Jump on Global Warming
Contra Costa Times, Feb. 6 -- Scientists say California's iconic landscapes -- from beaches to snow-capped mountains and fog-shrouded redwoods -- are in for dramatic changes as the world gets warmer. Now, with a new generation of computer models, they're trying to pinpoint to within a few miles what those changes will be: Less snow? More wildfires? Fewer native oaks in places such as Henry W. Coe State Park? Scientists want to understand how warming will affect the state's people, its economy, and the thousands of species, from giant sequoias to Sonoma chipmunks, that live in the state -- and nowhere else.
