Great Leaders
Drawn to a City of Dreams
San Diego Union-Tribune, Neil Morgan,
Feb. 20-For a research university ranked among the world's 10
best, UCSD must keep racing to maintain its
adrenaline appeal. After months of courtship, UCSD
stole Mario Molina, an environmental chemist
from MIT, to UCSD's chemistry department and
Scripps Institution of Oceanography. His arrival
completes a group of atmospheric scientists that is currently
unrivaled.

UC Students
Reach Out to Local School in Need
San Diego Union-Tribune, Feb. 20-As
the school district copes with a leaner budget, Del Mar Heights
Elementary has tapped into a treasure trove of volunteer help
from UC San Diego. Up to three-dozen student
volunteers are on campus each week, teaching the students science,
Spanish, engineering and athletics. They serve as tutors and
mentors, lunchtime supervisors and pals.

Boxer Walks
a Tightrope
Los Angeles Times, Feb. 20-Democrat
Barbara Boxer, one of the most liberal members of the U.S. Senate,
is treading a centrist path as the issue of gay marriage roils
the race to select a Republican to challenge her in November.
With a procession of gay weddings continuing at San Francisco
City Hall -- to the outcries of her GOP opponents -- Boxer said
Thursday that she supported the state's current domestic partnership
law, which provides benefits and protections for same-sex couples.

professor at UC San Diego.)

Songs in
the Key of Love
La Jolla Light, Feb. 12-"Today's
our anniversary," professor Janos Negyesy
said about his union with Paivikki Nykter.
"We've been married 11 years, six months and three days."
Negyesy's fondness of time together with Nykter
is a common thread in the fabric of their love for each other.
This love has made them inseparable in life, especially on the
campus of UCSD where they are both professors
in the music department.

County Program
to Help Navigate Cancer Resources
San Diego Union-Tribune, Feb. 20-For
the 12,000 San Diego County residents a year who are diagnosed
with cancer, life becomes a nightmare of tests, treatments and
tension, complicated by family angst and the need for support.
Starting today, an innovative county program funded with $1
million in tobacco litigation money will help patients and their
families find answers by phone or through a special Web site.
The Cancer Navigator, or cancernavigator.org Web site, will
guide people wanting to learn about any type of cancer, what's
known about treatments, research, trials and supportive care.

at UCSD.)

Complaints
About Popular Cold Medicine
KPIX TV-5, Feb. 20-Consumer Kay Henley
is missing something she used to take for granted. Vivid scents
became just a memory when she suddenly lost her normal ability
to smell. It's the result, she claims, of using a popular over-the-counter
cold remedy called Zicam. Terry Davidson M.D.
has seen the symptoms first hand at UC San Diego's
Nasal Dysfunction clinic.
