New Rules at the Border
Wall Street Journal, Feb. 21 -- Speedy repatriation is part of a new effort by the U.S. government to cut the red tape in deportations of illegal border-crossers. Amid the heated debate over the rising numbers of undocumented Latin Americans entering the U.S., the Department of Homeland Security in September announced a new initiative to expand the use of "expedited removals," or deportations that take place without an immigration hearing. (Quotes UCSD professor of political science Wayne Cornelius.) More

UCSD Board Member Praises Chancellor Fox
San Diego Union-Tribune, Feb. 22 -- Regarding “Set limits to outside work, says UC regent / Corporate board restrictions could affect UCSD's Fox” (News, Feb. 15): Any suggestion insinuating that UCSD Chancellor Marye Anne Fox has been neglecting her duties to enrich herself misapprehends the value of her activities to UCSD and the broader San Diego community. As a member of the UCSD Board of Overseers, I am informed about just how hard this immensely talented scientist and administrator has been working since taking the helm. (Letter to the editor by Daniel E. Eaton, member of the UCSD Board of Overseers.) More

UC Exec’s Outside Roles
San Francisco Chronicle, Feb. 22 -- The University of California has long encouraged administrators to be active in their community and profession, but some regents and lawmakers wonder whether UC executives are spending too much time away from their jobs. In the wake of disclosures that UCSD Chancellor Marye Anne Fox serves on 10 nonprofit and corporate boards, there have been calls for limits on executives' outside activities. More
Group Helps Community Members Connect
San Diego Union-Tribune, Feb. 22 -- Nancy Weare, a geochemistry research scientist at UCSD, wanted to create a sense of community and offer services to the elderly and people with special needs. So she formed Del Mar Community Connections seven years ago. Weare's determination, energy and personality have helped make the program a success, and the Del Mar resident was recently given the Leadership Award by San Diego's KGTV/Channel 10. More
More Underwater Gliders
Follow Whales and Hurricanes
Mail & Guardian (South Africa), Feb. 22 -- Ocean scientists can now plunge into the middle of the sea without leaving their offices. Two-metre, 45kg, underwater gliders are swimming the oceans of the world and dutifully sending data home on everything from whale calls to the massive waves produced by hurricanes. The gliders suck in and shoot out water to change their buoyancy and move up and down. Small wings on their missile-like bodies create lift to move horizontally. (Quotes Eric Terrill, director of the Coastal Observing Research and Development Center at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography.) More
A Movement to End Militarism:
Reflections from Project YANO
Political Affairs Magazine, Feb. 22 -- The Project on Youth and Non-military Opportunities (Project YANO) has been doing counter-recruitment for over two decades in the San Diego community. Rick Jahnkow, one of the organization's founders, first became active organizing draft resistance and opposition to the Vietnam War. Jorge Mariscal, a Vietnam veteran and professor at UCSD, got involved during the first Gulf War. Rick and Jorge talked about the military's recruitment effort in public schools and in the Latino community. More
Stem Cell Scientists
Undeterred by Korean Scandal
Olberlin Times (Kansas), Feb. 22 -- Stem cell researchers are undeterred by the scandal surrounding falsified South Korean research and said on Friday it is only a matter of time before someone clones a human embryo as a source of the valuable cells. They said the field was moving forward despite opposition from the United States and some other governments, and described progress in understanding how the cells might be used some day to transform medicine. (Quotes UCSD’s Dr. Lawrence Goldstein.) More
