Better Surgery
for Back Pain
NBC Houston, Jan. 19-Between 200,000
and 300,000 Americans have back surgery each year. In the past
year, the number of fusions people have has increased, and surgeons
perform about 100,000 fusions each year in the United States
alone. UCSD neurosurgeon Dr. William
Taylor says an increasing number of people do not want
to live with back pain. More

Lets Users Scrutinize University Graduation Rates
San Jose Mercury News, Jan. 19- A
new Web tool unveiled Tuesday by The Education Trust, a national
advocacy group for high academic achievement, that can be used
to compare graduation rates among similar public and private
universities, including UCSD.

by Dr. Ming T. Tsuang, a professor of psychiatry
at UCSD, on assessing the validity of blood-based
gene expressions profilers for classifying Schizophrenia and
