MBAs for
Anoraks
The Economist, Jan. 24-Although some
feel there are enough business schools in America today, the
UC San Diego School of Management, currently
in construction, aims to differ sharply from its rivals. It
will focus much more on educating managers who can launch and
run science and technology firms. With a budget of $120m, including
a $30m grant due to be announced on January 22nd by Ernest Rady,
a property and banking magnate, UCSD's Rady
School of Management will admit its first full-time class in
2005.

Bond a Solution, or Business as Usual?
Los Angeles Times, Jan. 23- In his
campaign to win voter approval of a $15-billion debt measure
on the March ballot, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger portrays its
bipartisan support as a major break from political gridlock
in Sacramento. Yet the proposal reflects an enduring mainstay
of business-as-usual in the state capital: A bipartisan unwillingness
to confront the politically tough choices of higher taxes or
drastic spending cuts, analysts say. (Quote by Steven
P. Erie, director of UC San Diego's
Urban Studies and Planning Program.)

Illegal
Immigrants Cite Bush Proposal as Reason for Coming to U.S.
Copley News Service, Jan. 22-More
than half the people accused of using phony documents to sneak
into the country through the San Ysidro, Calif., port of entry
in recent days cited President Bush's recent proposal to give
temporary legal status to millions of illegal immigrants as
their reason for coming. Bush's plan, designed to match willing
workers with willing employers, would provide temporary legal
status to illegal immigrants working in the United States and
others outside the country if they can show they have a job
offer. (Quote by Wayne Cornelius, director
of the Center for Comparative Immigration Studies at the University
of California, San Diego.)
