Big Flap Over World's Smallest Fish

National Geographic, Jan. 30-A U.S. scientist says that a male anglerfish found in the Philippines is the smallest fish in the world. Ted Pietsch, a fisheries professor at the University of Washington in Seattle, discovered the fish in the collection of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography. He first announced his find last May. Last week an international team of researchers announced that they, too, had discovered Earth's littlest fish. More

Paying Through the Nose
Washington Post, Jan. 31-The manufacturer of Zicam Cold Remedy has agreed to pay $12 million to settle 340 lawsuits brought by consumers who claim the popular over-the-counter zinc nasal gel damaged or destroyed their sense of smell. UC Offers Math,
Science Program for Talented Teens

CBS Channel 5, Jan. 30-University of California officials say talented students who love math and science and excel in those subjects have a chance to spend four weeks in residence at a campus this summer to learn more. Classes are offered at UC Davis, UC Irvine, UC Santa Cruz, and UCSD's Jacobs School of Engineering, and will run from July 9 through Aug. 5. More

Study Finds Anthrax
Toxins Also Harmful to Fruit Flies

Innovations Report, Jan. 30-Deadly and damaging toxins that allow anthrax to cause disease and death in mammals have similar toxic effects in fruit flies, according to a study conducted by biologists at UCSD. More

Exxon Posts Record Profits
Chicago Tribune, Jan. 30-Exxon Mobil Corp. reported Monday that it earned a profit of $36.1 billion in 2005. It was the biggest annual profit ever for a U.S. company, economists and analysts said. (Quote by James Hamilton, a professor of economics at UCSD.) More
