Cardiac
stretch sensors
The Scientist, Jan. 3 – A UCSD
research team led by Masahiko Hoshijima, Ralph
Knoll and Kenneth Chien found that
elevated mechanical stress on cardiac muscle cells can trigger
the activation of multiple signaling pathways involved in the
disease progression of dilated cardiomyopathy, a type of heart
failure where an enlarged heart loses its ability to pump blood,
and chronic heart failure. The research is published in the
December 27th issue of Cell.

Local beaches
see sand shortage
North County Times, Jan. 6 –
Driven by a series of heavy storms that hit the Northern California
coast in the last three weeks, huge waves have steadily pulled
sand off North County beaches. Bob Guza, an
oceanography professor with the Scripps Institution
of Oceanography, explained that an El Nino year can
exaggerate the natural pattern of southern ocean currents and
large waves. Guza is in the midst of a monitoring
project at Torrey Pines State Beach to track where and when
the sand moves in response to ocean waves and currents. http://www.nctimes.net/news/2003/20030106/52642.html
