A ‘Gizmo’ That Saves Lives
Mumbai Mirror, Dec. 30 -- When Javier Rodriguez Molina visited the Atocha Train Station Memorial in Madrid last year, the Barcelona native felt a great sadness for the victims of the 11 March 2004 Madrid train bombings. But he also felt some hope that his advanced emergency technology work at UCSD can some day save lives in similar disasters.Police, fire-fighters and other emergency workers responding to natural or manmade disasters may someday save more lives with the help of ‘Gizmo,’ an advanced mobile wireless communications device. Special Camps Help kids with Asthma Cope
Reuters UK, Jan. 3 -- Attending a special asthma camp can help children improve their asthma management skills, a new study shows. However, more than one third of the children still had poorly controlled asthma, despite being under a doctor's care. "I think some of what we saw was just parents accepting that kids miss school, kids miss sleep at night, kids can't participate in sports and certain activities," lead investigator Dr. Michael J. Welch, at the UCSD School of Medicine, told Reuters Health. More

UCSD Receives $1 Million Endowment Grant
San Diego Union Tribune, Jan. 4 -- UCSD has received a $1 million endowment grant to enhance educational programming for older adults. The gift for UCSD Extension's Osher Lifelong Learning Institute will increase course offerings, draw more high-profile speakers and boost marketing for the program. More

Gompers School Director Up For Award
Voice of San Diego, Jan. 3 -- Gompers Charter Middle School director Vince Riveroll is one of four finalists for the Outstanding Young Educator Award. Gompers is among the best-known charter schools in San Diego, after a blitz of media attention when it opened in 2005. It has won attention for its disciplined environment, but its test scores have yet to reach state goals. The school is built along the same educational model as Preuss School at UCSD. More
