On The Trail Of Greenhouse Gases
CBS News, Jan. 12 -- The nation’s most advanced research plane has begun a 24,000-mile, pole-to-pole trip and the scientists aboard hope to capture the first-ever global picture of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases in the Earth’s atmosphere. The project is a joint effort led by Harvard University, the National Science Foundation, the National Center for Atmospheric Research, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the Scripps Institution of Oceanography. Langland Not Lagging in the Pool
Monterey County Herald, Jan. 12 -- Todd Langland swam the third fastest Division II time in the nation this year in the 100-yard freestyle, clocking 45.02 seconds. A junior at UCSD, the mark is an automatic qualifying time for the nationals. He also swam the 50-yard free at the Nike Cup in Long Beach in 20.95. More

Burnham Chief Acted Improperly on Stem Cell Grant
North County Times, Jan. 12 -- Burnham Institute president John Reed improperly tried to influence a grant decision by California's $3 billion stem cell program, a state ethics committee said last week. However, no penalty will be levied on Reed, who remains on the board of the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine. It said that since Reed's intervention did not and could not have succeeded, no penalty was needed. (Mentions UCSD) More
