Popular or Not? Your Genes May Help Decide

, Jan. 27 -- Tucked away in the twisted strands of DNA that make you human are genes that may determine whether you are sociable or shy. A new study co-authored by UCSD researcher James Fowler, comparing the two types of twins, shows that genetics might affect social behavior, and the scientists who made the discovery say they are closing in on some of those "personality" genes. Scientists Shake Out Clues to Earthquake Damage

, Jan. 27 -- On Monday, researchers at the Englekirk Structural Engineering Center, run by UCSD’s Jacobs School of Engineering, used a device to violently vibrate a one-story masonry veneer structure that was built to resemble many homes and businesses in Southern California. From that shaking, academics and building-industry specialists hope to add to their knowledge about how to prepare California, and the nation, to withstand the killer earthquakes thought to be slouching toward us.
