Balloon Back Surgery
NBC Channel7/39, San Diego, July 29-A new back surgery called kyphoplasty uses a device as simple as a balloon to mend spinal fractures. During the procedure, a surgeon inserts a small tube into the fracture in the spine. The tube expands into a balloon, creating a space in the fracture that lets a surgeon insert bone cement, patching up the fracture. "It stabilizes the bone so it doesn't wiggle," said Choll Kim, a doctor at UCSD Medical Center, one of the first hospitals in the country to perform the operation. "It gives it a lasting effect."
