No Benefit Found in Plan to Modernize LAX
Los Angeles Times, July 9—Mayor James K. Hahn's proposal to modernize Los Angeles International Airport would cost about $9 billion but provide no discernible benefit for the local economy beyond the short-term jobs created during construction, according to an economic analysis to be released today. Hartford Courant, July 8—In the Courant’s June 29 article implying that Howard University College of Medicine provides substandard education for its students, the Courant ignored experiences of other colleges of medicine including the University of California, San Diego.

State exit exam may be delayed
San Diego Union-Tribune, July 9— California's incoming 11th-and 12th-graders are expected to get a reprieve from the requirement that they pass the state's exit exam before they are granted diplomas. The Sweetwater Union High School District canceled exam prep courses in expectation of the state's decision today, but GEAR UP, a federal and state-sponsored college prep program run by UCSD, operates an exit exam summer academy at Sweetwater High.
