The
New York Times, July 15— There has been
a flurry of grid projects in the last few years in the United
States, Europe and Japan, most of them collaborations among
scientific researchers at national laboratories and universities
on projects like climate modeling, high-energy physics, genetic
research, earthquake simulations and brain research. Researchers
from the University of California, San Diego,
are currently participating on a project called the Brain Morphometry
BIRN. It involves pooling and processing magnetic resonance
imaging data to look for early anatomical and functional precursors
of Alzheimer’s disease.

Cisco storage distance claims
Techworld, July 15— There are
many advantages of using IP networks as storage systems. Using
the IP infrastructure you are not tied into a particular system
and you do not have to set up a dedicated line to be used exclusively
for storage. Both these factors make distance storage far cheaper
and hence more affordable for a whole new range of companies.
One such company is the San Diego Supercomputer Center,
who ran multiple gigabit lines from San Diego to Baltimore at
740MBps on an OC-192 link.

Foundry Integrate Solutions
Lightreading.com, July 14— NetScout
Systems and Foundry Networks® Inc. announced they are offering
an integrated network monitoring and management solution that
will enhance IT managers' abilities to proactively monitor and
optimize network and application performance. The two companies
recently completed testing of the joint solution at the San
Diego Supercomputer Center, which used NetScout's new
CDM(TM) Adaptor for sFlow to collect and integrate sFlow into
real-time displays and reports generated by NetScout's nGenius®
Performance Management System. http://www.lightreading.com/document.asp?site=lightreading&doc_id=36948

We had surgery abroad
The Express, July 15— It's not
just sun, sea and relaxation that entice Britons overseas every
year. Foreign hospitals can be a Mecca for people who need life-changing
operations. Jules Hunter meets three women who've gone abroad
for surgery, one of whom was referred to the UCSD
Thornton Hospital.
