Ice Cold: Man Swims at North Pole
ABC News, July 17 -- He may have been diving into some of the coldest water on Earth, but Lewis Gordon Pugh had global warming on his mind. The 37-year-old British explorer completed the coldest swim ever Sunday at the North Pole. His goal? To draw attention to global warming by taking a dip in the 29 degree sea, which until recently was covered in thick ice. (Quotes Dr. Robert Schoene of UCSD) More

Public Universities Need Our Support
San Diego Union-Tribune, Opinion, July 17 -- In the past few decades, California public education has suffered a long-term decline in state funding. While the UCSD has annual revenues of $2.2 billion, only 24 percent of this is from the federal government for research and just 12 percent is from the state of California. Beyond tuition, there is a shortfall in the university's operating budget that must be made up by gifts from individuals and private foundations. More

Bill would give FDA power to regulate cigarettes
USA Today, July 13 -- July 16 — The federal agency charged with keeping food and drugs from harming people may soon be asked to take a consumer product that kills more than 400,000 people a year and make it safer. The product is the cigarette — generally acknowledged as anything but safe. Smoking accounts for nearly one in five deaths in the United States. Doctor to swim English Channel for charity
North County Times, July 17 - An anesthesiologist from UCSD’s Shiley Eye Center will swim the English Channel in August to raise money for a children's charity, it was announced today. More
