Rare Bipartisan Tag Team Takes on Wisconsin House Veteran
The New York Times, July 25 -- Fifteen-term Rep. F. James Sensenbrenner Jr., a Wisconsin Republican, has rarely faced a serious challenge during a long House career in a stretch of suburban Milwaukee where Republican voters dominate. But Sensenbrenner, in the 2008 campaign, is being double-teamed by Republican Jim Burkee and Democrat Jeff Walz, friends and teaching colleagues at the district’s Concordia University — who are staging a rare tandem challenge to the incumbent. Exit the King
San Diego CityBEAT, July 25 – Floyd Gaffney died Thursday, July 19, at age 77 following a recent diagnosis of stomach cancer. A UCSD professor emeritus, Gaffney was a theater faculty member from the department's inception in the early 1970s, and he'd helmed nearly 90 plays, the preponderance of which reflected his commitment to theater's social and cultural relevance. Those qualities also mark San Diego's Common Ground Theatre, of which Gaffney was artistic director. More
Foreign Goods
San Diego CityBEAT, July 25 – Sara Bongiorni made ridding her family's life of Chinese products a yearlong crusade. In 2005, Bongiorni wrote a short article that showed how Chinese products had permeated every part of her daily life. After the article gained worldwide interest, she took it to the next level by attempting to live without Chinese goods for a year and wrote a book about her experience. Bongiorni, a UCSD alum, will discuss her new book, “A Year Without ‘Made in China': One Family's True Life Adventure in the Global Economy,” at 7 p.m. Thursday, July 26, at Book Works. More
