Fat Comes In on Little Cat Feet
New York Times, Opinion, July 27 – The New England Journal of Medicine has just published a study concluding that fat is catching, particularly among close mutual friends of the same sex. As Gina Kolata reported in The Times, Dr. Nicholas Christakis and UCSD Professor James Fowler took a very large and very long-running federally funded study of heart disease in Framingham, Mass., and used it to examine who in Framingham had gained or lost weight over the past 32 years, and how they connected to one another. Unsurprisingly, they found that relationships mattered.” More

San Diego Union-Tribune, July 27– Born in Salt Lake City in March 1914, the oldest of nine children, Leland McPhie was a self-taught pole vaulter at Colton Union High School from 1929 to 1933. Since returning to track in the 1990s, he has set world and American records in the high jump and throws and won more than 200 gold medals. Five days a week, he's either toning muscles on the weight machines at the YMCA or practicing throws and jumps at UCSD. More
