Nerve Cells Free to Swap
Careers
Nature,
June 3-The nervous system is not hard-wired, according to research
on spinal cord cells in tadpole embryos. Nerve cells can change
their function as they develop, responding to their own electrical
activity rather than playing a role that is preordained by genetics,
say Nick Spitzer and his fellow neurobiologists
from the University of California, San Diego.

Perception
Depends on Brain Specialization
United Press International, June 2-U.S.
scientists have uncovered evidence of how the brain makes sense
of the electrical impulses sent to it by millions of neurons
from the body. Neurobiologists at the University of California,
San Diego, said light, sound and odors, for example, are transformed
by the sensory organs into a code made of series of electrical
impulses that travel along neurons from the body to the brain.

Yes, Dogs
Really Do Resemble Their Owners
Reuters, June 2-Previous research
has hinted that people like dogs that
resemble them. To investigate further, Michael M. Roy
and his co-author Nicholas J. S. Christenfeld
both from the University of California, San
Diego separately photographed 45 dogs and their owners.
Twenty-five of the dogs were purebred. Roy
and Christenfeld found that a majority of strangers
paired 16 out of 25 purebred dogs with their owners, but matched
only 7 out
of 20 non-purebred dogs, the authors report in the journal Psychological
Science.

Chronicle of Higher Education, June
4-A growing number of colleges are requesting, or even requiring,
that recommendations for graduate school be sent via the Web.
Some institutions, such the University of California,
San Diego,
even plan to build their own systems. Some professors love the
new system, while others feel it's time consuming.

Ashes to Ashes, Dust to
Dust in 'Pompeii'
La Jolla Village News, June 3-In 79
A.D. Mt. Vesuvius erupted, completely covering Pompeii with
ash. The Roman residents were instantly buried alive as they
were going about their daily activity. Time stood still. The
lustfully decadent Roman Empire was at the pinnacle of excess
- living the good life as if it would
go on forever. The current art exhibit at UCSD's
University Art Gallery, "The Last Days of Pompeii"
by conceptual artist Eleanor Antin, is an interpretation
of the events based on archeological ruins and history.
