A Formula
for More Math Teachers
Los Angeles Times, June 1-The number
of credentialed math and science teachers graduating annually
from the state's public universities would more than double
by 2010 under a plan unveiled Tuesday by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Under the "California Teach" program, the UC system
would quadruple the number of credentialed science and math
teacher graduates to 1,000 per year by 2010. Students would
receive classroom experience starting their freshman year and
a yearlong paid internship upon graduation. More

Housing Studied as Way to Retain Faculty
Los Angeles Daily News, May 31-With
Cal State University of Northridge faculty salaries ranging
from $55,700 to $82,700, retention of professors has long been
a challenge because of the region's high housing costs. But,
in recent years, rocketing housing prices in the state have
propelled the problem to a new level, prompting officials at
some universities, including UCSD, to propose
on-campus housing as a recruitment and retention tool for professors.

Can Be Caused by Mutations in a Gene

inherited form of epilepsy that results in death by the age
of 30, can be caused by mutations in a gene that regulates the
