Pollution
Shifting Rain Patterns in Sierra, Worldwide
San Francisco Chronicle, June 10-
As he flew high above the snowy Sierra Nevada this spring, atmospheric
scientist Veerabhadran Ramanathan saw confirmation
of what he'd both hoped and feared to see: Big, dark storm clouds
that weren't producing any rain. Air pollution appears to be
altering rainfall patterns in the Sierra and around the world,
said Ramanathan of the Scripps Institution
of Oceanography in La Jolla. It's the latest fallout
from an exploding human population that over the last half-century
has pushed untold tons of
smog, soot and ash into the atmosphere, he said Thursday at
the nation's first state-sponsored global warming research program.

Eleanor Antin's The Last Days of Pompeii
Décor and Style Magazine, June
2004-In her current exhibition at the University of
California, San Diego's University Art Gallery, The
Last Days of Pompeii, Eleanor Antin evokes narratives of a sensually
decadent Roman
Empire-affluence and excess on the verge of extinction. The
images are both luscious in their visceral appeal and beguiling
for their multiple levels of interpretation.

Warming
Climate is Changing State Profoundly, Experts Say
Copley News Service, June 10-The Earth's
warming climate already is
profoundly changing California, and the state will have to make
difficult choices
in coming decades, scientists said Wednesday. The commission
is sponsoring
a two-day meeting this week in Sacramento - the first of its
kind - to discuss
how the globe's changing climate is expected to alter life in
California, and what actions the state can take to minimize
the changes and deal with them. The commission's California Climate
Change Center was formed two years ago as a partnership between
academics at University of California Berkeley and UCSD's
Scripps Institution of Oceanography.

School Staffs'
Donations Add Up to College Cash
San Diego Union-Tribune, June 10-Teachers
giving money for scholarships for their students has been going
on for decades in the Grossmont Union High School District.
For a $1 donation to the staff scholarship fund, they get to
wear casual clothes for the day instead of their usual collared
shirts and ties or dresses. The amounts raised at these schools
and others tend to be modest
but always much needed. (Quote by Vince De Anda,
UCSD's financial aid office director.)

Woman Surfer
Hoping to Ride Wave of Change
San Diego Union-Tribune, June 11-She
has graced the cover of magazines, appeared in numerous television
programs and risen through the ranks to professional surfdom,
but UCSD grad Holly Beck has her sights set
far beyond the next peeling barrel. Beck is president and co-founder
of the International Women's Surfing Organization, which aims
to expand the number of female surfers by promoting regional
competitions and by teaching athletes how to compete and market
themselves.
