Killer Bees
Send Out Spies Before Launching Air Raid
The Times (London), June 16-Bee colonies
send out spies to eavesdrop on
their neighbors before invading their territories and stealing
their food, scientists from the University of California,
San Diego have found. Research led by UCSD's
James Nieh, has revealed that bees are adept
in the art of espionage, sniffing out the chemical markers left
by other species to guide them back to
food and seizing the source for themselves.

Deadly
Blood Clots Likelier to Recur in Men
Forbes, June 16-To their surprise,
Viennese researchers have found that men who have had one life-threatening
deep vein clot are much more likely than women to have a recurrence.
"Up to now, we do not have a ready explanation for this
finding," said Paul A. Kyrle M.D., an associate professor
of medicine at the Medical University of Vienna and lead author
of a report published in the June 17 issue of the New England
Journal of Medicine. "It is counterintuitive to everything
we thought," said Lewis J. Rubin M.D.,
a professor of medicine at the University of California,
San Diego and co-author of an accompanying editorial.

What is
an American?
United Press International, June 16-Ask
any American on the street what it means to be an American citizen,
and you're likely to get an array of answers: rights and freedoms,
the ability to vote, or the attachment and pride one feels for
the United States. If you add the concept of dual citizenship
to the question, however, the notion of what makes an American
"American" becomes blurred. (Quote by David
Gutierrez, a professor at the University of
California, San Diego.)

New Escondido Studios
Highlight Summer Art Scene
North
County Times, June 17-North County embraces art
in a big way. Not only do residents support galleries, studios
and museums, groups in several communities have organized special
events to promote art appreciation and sales. Outside the area,
but involving local artists, is "Supersonic" at the
Art Center, College of Art Design in Pasadena. The exhibit involves
one wind tunnel, eight schools and 120 artists. Representing
San Diego County are students from UC San Diego's
Master of Fine Arts program. http://www.nctimes.com/articles/2004/06/16/entertainment/art/
