New Creams Smooth Wrinkles, but They're Not Botox
New York Times, June 22-Welcome to the world of anti-aging cosmetics, a vast and chaotic bazaar where hundreds of creams, lotions and gels vie for the dollars of 90 million Americans eager to turn back the clock. But are over-the-counter creams as effective as medical procedures? (Quote by Mark G. Rubin, an associate professor of dermatology at the University of California, San Diego.)

Father's Day Special: All-Star Animal Dads
National Geographic, June 18-With 66.3 million fathers in the United States, neckties may be flying out of the store this week in anticipation of Father's Day. It's a great time to appreciate Dad for years of service-teaching you to drive a stick, helping you buy your first home, or even showing you how to work a Windsor knot on your very own tie. But there are a slew of lesser-known fathers in the animal kingdom with intensive parenting skills of their own. (Quote by Paul Ponganis, a research physiologist at Scripps Institution of Oceanography.)

Blood Clot Study Finds Men at Higher Risk of Recurrence than Women
Arizona Republic, June 22-To their surprise, Viennese researchers have found that men who have had one life-threatening deep vein clot are much more likely than women to have a recurrence. "Up to now, we do not have a ready explanation for this finding," said Dr. Paul A. Kyrle, an associate professor of medicine at the Medical University of Vienna and lead author of a report published in the June 17 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine. "It is counterintuitive to everything we thought," said Lewis J. Rubin M.D., a professor of medicine at the University of California, San Diego and co-author of an accompanying editorial.

Some Mexicans in U.S. Going to Greater Lengths to Vote Back Home
Dallas Morning News, June 22-Before embarking last week on a trip to Chicago, Minneapolis and Detroit, Mexican President Vicente Fox sent a bill to Congress that would make Mexican immigrants eligible to vote overseas in his country's 2006 presidential elections. The Fox bill would allow Mexicans abroad to vote in booths, electronically or by standard mail. Congressional approval may come this year. Petaflop Imperative
Information Week, June 21-Breaking the petaflop barrier has all the symbolism of the four-minute mile. But businesses want progress on a more-important measurement: Time to insight. (Quote by Phil Andrews, director of high-end computing at the San Diego Supercomputer Center.)
