Regents
to pick UC president
San Diego Union-Tribune, June 10—The
University of California Board of Regents is expected to select
a new president tomorrow for the 200,000-student, nine-campus
system to replace Richard C. Atkinson, who is retiring this
fall. Although officials have not released the identity of the
finalist, several internal candidates were reported to be on
the original list, including Chancellor Robert C. Dynes
of UC San Diego.

Team helps
restore Iraq's treasures
Copley News Service, June 9—A
team of American scholars hopes to aid a restoration effort,
helping Iraqi officials to re-establish their museum, restore
records, train new curators, and try to recover what's been
lost. The American Coordinating Committee for Iraqi Cultural
Heritage is chaired by Robert McCormick Adams,
professor of anthropology at the University of California
at San Diego. He is a scholar of ancient Middle East
culture and history, and the director of the Smithsonian Institution
from 1984 to 1994.

fun and games
San Diego Union-Tribune, June 10—San
Diego County Fair opens this Friday. Fairgoers can quench a
thirst for knowledge at the Scripps Ocean Explorations
exhibit in the Activity Center, part of the fair's Commotion
by the Ocean theme. Birch Aquarium and UCSD's
Scripps Institution of Oceanography have created a world of
kelp beds, coral reefs and outlandish ocean inhabitants, such
as fish that create their own light and deep sea creatures that

Protein
Necessary for Fruit Fly Development Could Heal Wounds in Mammals
Betterhumans, June 9— In healing
from cuts, mammals require a protein fundamental to the embryonic
development of fruit flies. The finding, by biologists from
the University of California San Diego, may
help researchers understand the mechanisms responsible for healing
and in designing new drugs to help diabetics and burn victims
whose healing is greatly compromised.

art, the Mission Bay way; UCSF gets it right at its new campus
San Francisco Chronicle, June 10—
UCSF appointed a committee to solicit and assess proposals from
artists for prominent public areas of its new Mission Bay campus.
Prominent advisory committee members include Mary Beebe,
who oversees UC San Diego's impressive collection
of public art.
