How Far Does Diversity Go? --- Justices' Ruling May Spur Others to Seek Preferences; Recruiting Southeast Asians
Wall Street Journal, June 25— The U.S. Supreme Court's decision Monday upholding race preference in admissions is likely to deepen the confusion surrounding who qualifies for affirmative action and why -- and to encourage more ethnic, racial and geographic groups to seek preference in both education and the workplace. UCSD scientist, teacher was expert on infectious diseases
San Diego Union-Tribune, June 26—Dr. Leland Rickman of UCSD, an expert in infectious disease who helped the county prepare to fight bioterrorism after Sept. 11, died Tuesday while on a teaching mission in southern Africa. He was in the African nation of Lesotho with Dr. Chris Mathews of UCSD, the director of the university's Owen Clinic for AIDS patients.

San Diego researchers developing sonar to save Florida manatees
The Associated Press, June 25—The Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California, San Diego is developing technology to reliably recognize the sound waves that bounce off Florida manatees in hope of protecting the endangered mammals from run-ins with motorboats.

Nevada marijuana study gets nowhere
The Associated Press, June 25— Two years have passed since the Legislature directed the University of Nevada Medical School to conduct a study on the effectiveness of medical marijuana, but there hasn't been any progress since the 2001 Legislature. The only clinical trials are being done at the University of California at San Diego, and they are financed by the state of California, not the federal government.

Updates on Billion-Dollar Campaigns at 23 Universities
Chronicle of Higher Education, June 25— The 23 American universities that are seeking to raise at least $1-billion, collected a total of $284.9-million in gifts and pledges during the last month for which they had data available. The University of California at San Diego, has raised $465.7-million as of April 15; the goal is $1-billion by 2007.
