KPBS, June 16 -- A local philanthropic group is donating $400,000 to the neo-natal intensive care unit at UCSD Medical Center in Hillcrest. It's the largest gift the unit has ever received. More

All About Jazz, June 14 -- Bass player Mark Dresser is a veteran of Anthony Braxton's quartet and Denman Maroney is the creator of the term “hyperpiano,” used to distinguish his approach from that of other pianists using prepared techniques for piano. Those two factors alone say enough about where their music is coming from, which by default arguably places great emphasis on where they take it. Dresser is on the UCSD music faculty. More
Students Turn the Tables on School Research -- And Do It Themselves
Voice of San Diego, June 15 -- Trained by researchers from UCSD, students at four different schools chose their own questions, learned to conduct interviews, gathered and analyzed data from surveys and classroom visits, and even explained their work at an annual conference for education wonks in the convention center downtown. The teens volunteered for the project and met roughly once a week after school. More
UCSD-TV wins Emmy
Del Mar Times, June 15 -- UCSD-TV took home the Emmy Award in the Entertainment-Program or Special category for "La Jolla Symphony & Chorus: Philip Glass' Cello Concerto." UCSD-TV's Arts and Humanities producer John Menier accepted the award - his fifth career Emmy win and UCSD-TV's thirteenth - at the June 13 ceremony in downtown San Diego. More
