Laughter's
Perennial at the Doctor's Seussentennial
The New York Times, March 2-Dr. Seuss
is getting a United States postage stamp, a statue and, on March
11, a star on Hollywood's Walk of Fame. It's all part of a bicoastal
celebration of the centennial of Theodor Geisel, best known
as Dr. Seuss, the man responsible for the Grinch, the Cat in
the Hat and the Lorax, among other unforgettable creatures.
Here in his hometown, the University of California,
San Diego, has a Geisel Library, which on Tuesday will
unveil a bronze statue showing "Ted sitting at his desk,
one of his legs plopped on its top with 'The Cat in the Hat'
standing behind him," his wife, Audrey, said. "It's
perfect because that man never had both feet on the ground.
One leg represents reality, the other his imagination."

Hoorah! Hooray! It's Dr. Seuss' Birthday!
CNN News, March 1-Nearly 13 years
after her husband Theodor "Dr. Seuss" Geisel's passing,
Audrey Geisel leads the global enterprise that has sprouted
from Seuss' beloved books - watching over the Cat in the Hat,
the Grinch and all the other critters and characters who live
on in movies, toys, games and ventures that perhaps not even
the imaginative doctor could have envisioned. Geisel is currently
presiding over a year's worth of ceremonies celebrating "Seussentennial:
A Century of Imagination." The events include the unveiling
of a Dr. Seuss sculpture at the Geisel Library at the University
of California, San Diego.

UC Schools
See Patents as New Revenue Stream
San Diego Business Journal, March
1-UC San Diego's Alan Paau
takes pride in wedding his school's technologies with venture
capital and biotechnology firms. With money as tight as it is
these days for the university, Paau's role
linking researchers with potential investors in licensing deals
has become a respectable source of income. Last year alone,
UCSD's technology transfer and intellectual
property office, where Paau is the assistant
vice chancellor, received 42 patents from the U.S. Patent and
Trademark Office.

Report Questions
Role of Mexican Crater
Associated Press, March 1-A Mexican
crater often cited as evidence that a single asteroid wiped
out the dinosaurs may not have been involved in that extinction
at all, according to a new report. A group of researchers led
by Gerta Keller of Princeton University contends that the impact
that caused the crater occurred 300,000 years before the extinction.
However, Richard D. Norris of the Scripps
Institution of Oceanography, responded that the group
has incorrectly located the K-T boundary and noted it suggests
the sediments were deposited mainly in deep, quiet water.
