San Diego Union-Tribune Editorial, March 10 -- In a development of historic proportions for San Diego, four premier research entities on Torrey Pines Mesa – UCSD, the Burnham Institute for Medical Research, the Scripps Research Institute and the Salk Institute for Biological Studies – are coming together to conduct joint research in regenerative medicine. Moves to Baja Profit Tech Firms
Los Angeles Times, March 10 -- This border city — perhaps best known for tunnel-digging drug smugglers, bottomless margaritas and maquiladoras that churn out cheap toys — is quietly transforming itself into a high-tech manufacturing hub. A new report says northwest Mexico is reaping the benefits of an ambitious government program aimed at leveraging the region's low costs and proximity to leading-edge firms in San Diego. Of the more than 60 medical device firms operating in Baja, at least 40 have U.S. parent companies and 13 of those have a significant San Diego presence, according to the report by San Diego Dialogue, which is affiliated with UCSD. ‘Hands Free’ Isn’t Mind Free:
Performing Even Tasks Impairs Driving
PhysOrg.Com, March 10 -- Do you think using a hands-free device makes it okay to talk on a cell phone while driving? Despite the well-intended laws requiring the use of hands-free devices, a driver's performance is impaired when distracted by even the simplest tasks, whether or not both hands are on the steering wheel. (Quotes UCSD scientists Jonathan Levy and Harold Pashler, the study’s authors.) More
Film Screening Salutes Josephine Baker
San Diego Union-Tribune, March 10 -- Myth, mystery and mystique surround Josephine Baker, much of it perpetuated by the icon herself. Born into poverty in 1906, the St. Louis native blended primal imagery with glamorous modernist fantasies and overcame skin-color limitations to become one of the most popular, provocative and versatile entertainers of the Jazz Age. In celebration of Baker's centennial, UCSD is screening her 1927 French film, “La Sirène des Tropiques,” (“Siren of the Tropics”) Sunday at the Geisel Library. (Quotes Bennetta Jules-Rosette, a UCSD sociology professor and director of the African and African-American Studies Research Project.) More
The Puzzle of Alzheimer’s
Paramus Post (N.J.), March 9 -- For 72-year-old Mary Lynch, it's a no-brainer. Although there's no cure for Alzheimer's disease, some studies theorize that by keeping the body and mind healthy and active, we can delay the disease or possibly prevent it. That's good enough for this former Air Force nurse. Although Lynch is retired, she's not idle. If she's not walking around the San Diego Zoo or playing golf, she's volunteering at the Alzheimer's Association, reading one of her favorite historical novels, or completing crossword puzzles. "When it comes to the brain, if you don't use it, you're going to lose it," says the San Diego resident. (Quotes Mary Sundsmo, program director for the Shiley-Marcos Alzheimer's Disease Research Center at UCSD.) More
City Sees Peters Rise to Power
Voice of San Diego, March 10 -- While much attention has been given to the fact that Jerry Sanders is the city's first "strong" mayor in more than 70 years, Scott Peters has ascended into a position of head dealmaker: He's the liaison between a mayor with ambitions and a legislative body that has the final say. And a person in that position has some power. (Quotes Steve Erie, a political scientist at UCSD and an author of Proposition F.) More
