Cities Vie
in Stem Cell Quest
San Francisco Chronicle, March 17
- Several California cities jumped into the great Proposition
71 headquarters derby Wednesday, the deadline for filing formal
bids to become the capital of the state's $3 billion stem cell
enterprise. Decision makers within the stem cell institute have
been privately suggesting the Bay Area and San Diego, both hotbeds
of biotech research, as the preferred locations. San Diego touted
a stunning view of the Pacific from the posh Torrey Pines area
of La Jolla - and free office space from which to enjoy that
view. The proposed San Diego site is vacant space in a building
just across the street from Torrey Pines golf course and within
a mile of the Scripps Research Institute, Salk Institute for
Biological Studies, Burnham Institute and UC San Diego.

Regents Discuss UCSD Medical Plan; Critics
Fear for Poor
San Diego Union-Tribune, March 17
- University of California regents appeared to like what they
heard yesterday about UC San Diego's long-term
medical service plan, which would transfer major health care
treatments from its Hillcrest hospital to La Jolla. The plan
has received considerable criticism from some San Diego health
care providers and elected officials, who say indigent patients
would be abandoned. (Quote by Edward Holmes,
UCSD Vice Chancellor for Health Services.)

Skepticism About Global Warming Wanes
with New Research
San Diego Daily Transcript, March
16 - The British newspaper The Independent wasn't shy last month
in asserting the significance of the latest climate change news
from Scripps Institution of Oceanography's
Tim Barnett and David Pierce.
The headline of the paper's Feb. 19 article read "The Final
Proof: Global Warming is a Man-Made Disaster." Barnett
and Pierce will be the first to tell you, however,
that this is not the final proof. In their line of work, such
a finish line is never reached. Science deals in empirical evidence
rather than the proofs of mathematics. More

Beyond Steroids: Designer Genes
Washington Post, March 17 - Today,
as a series of muscular baseball superstars troop to Capitol
Hill for what is sure to be a well-publicized congressional
hearing, the word on everyone's lips (and possibly in a few
hips) is: steroids. But in a few years, some scientists suggest,
the phrase whispered among would-be home-run hitters and Olympic
contenders could well be: gene doping. (Quote by Theodore
Friedmann, director of the gene therapy program at
the University of California at San Diego.)

Casting
Call Continues Chicano Soldier's Crusade
San Jose Mercury News, March 17 -
Charley Trujillo is looking for a few good men, fit and ready
for military duty -- on the silver screen. The actors casting
call represents the latest venture for the San Jose author,
who is making ``Dogs from Illusion,'' a movie about
the Vietnam War. Based on his 1994 novel, the independent feature
film will mark a first-time directing turn for Trujillo, a veteran
who lost an eye in the war and was awarded a Purple Heart and
a Bronze Star. (Quote by Jorge Mariscal, professor
of humanities and literature at the University of California,
San Diego.) More
Clarifying
the Source of that 'Risque' Video
San Diego Union-Tribune, Letter to
the Editor, March 16 - With the recent controversy surrounding
a risque video shown on UCSD's Student Run
Television (SRTV), it appears that some confusion has developed
between SRTV and the university's broadcast station, UCSD-TV.
Let us clarify the distinction. More
