May Hit Tijuana, Report Says

, March 2 -- Tijuana, long thought to have a relatively small prevalence of HIV infection, is on the cusp of an alarming AIDS outbreak rivaling those experienced by many major U.S. cities, including San Diego, with as many as one in 125 people ages 15 to 49 now infected. Hope in a Hopeless Neighborhood
Voice of San Diego, March 2 – Nativity Prep Academy is a catholic college prep school for at-risk children. Seeing a need for change, NPA Founder David Rivera took the steps to bring about an educational revolution in 2001. He found that by opening the nonprofit middle school, area kids could get a private school education -- for free. Bringing together a group of his friends from UCSD, and Notre Dame, to develop a plan, Rivera said they all came to the same conclusion, "to open up an amazing nonprofit school that would have a huge impact on people's lives." , March 2 -- Eight in 10 Internet surfers use the Web to find information about health issues, according to the Pew Internet & American Life Project. That equates to about 95 million people. Nowadays, physicians often find patients arriving for their appointments with a possible diagnosis in hand or treatment options suggested by a Web site, said Dr. David Bazzo, associate clinical professor of family medicine at UCSD School of Medicine. Protest Gets ‘Naked for Justice’

KFMB TV8, March 2 -- Wearing signs, banners and not much else, about two dozen UCSD students marched to the campus bookstore Wednesday to protest what they say is the school’s sale of sweatshop goods. The group disrobed down to their underwear, claiming they couldn’t find any clothing in the bookstore that wasn’t made in a sweatshop. More

Body Parts Case Has Local Links

, March 2 -- Donor tissue from a New Jersey company whose owner is charged with stealing body parts from cadavers has ended up in several transplant recipients in San Diego County. None of the patients – two from UCSD Medical Center and “less than 10” from Sharp Memorial Hospital in San Diego and Sharp Grossmont Hospital in La Mesa – have shown any signs of harm, officials at both institutions said.
