Two Biggest
Gifts to U.S. Charities in 2003 Made by San Diegans
Los Angeles Times, March 25-The nation's
two largest philanthropic gifts of 2003 were made by San Diegans,
according to the Chronicle of Philanthropy. The estate of McDonald's
heiress Joan Kroc donated $360 million to charity, including
$200 million to National Public Radio, the smallest gift to
lead the national donors list since it was first published in
1998. The second largest gift donated last year came from Qualcomm
magnate Irwin Jacobs and his wife, Joan, who presented $110
million to the UC San Diego School of Engineering.

Smart Partners for Charter Schools
San Jose Mercury News, March 25-Some
school districts don't want anything to do with charter schools
but, by law, are supposed to administer them. Some universities
would relish the chance to oversee charter schools -- but can't.
The solution would be to pass AB 2764. The bill would permit
public universities and colleges to sponsor and supervise charter
schools. Some universities already have strong ties to charter
schools, including the highly acclaimed Preuss School that is
under the wing of UC San Diego.

Too Much
Sleep Just as Bad as Too Little?
WebMD Medical News, March 23-Researchers
found "long" sleepers who sleep more than eight hours
a night report just as many sleep complaints as "short"
sleepers who get less than seven hours of slumber. "Although
it is unclear why long and short sleepers should have similar
types of sleep complaints, this data challenges the assumption
that more than seven or eight hours of sleep is associated with
increased health and well-being," writes researcher Michael
Grandner, of the University of California,
San Diego, and colleagues.

High Court
Tackles Limits of 'God' in Government
Chicago Daily Herald, March 25-To
those who signed the Declaration of Independence in 1776, the
truths "That all men are created equal," and "that
they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights,"
were self-evident. Now, 228 years later, the U.S. Supreme Court
finds itself at the center of a debate over the Pledge of Allegiance
that suggests such views about the religious underpinnings of
American government may no longer be self-evident. (Quote by
Peter Irons, director of the Earl Warren Bill
of Rights Project at the University of California, San
Diego.)

Fish Go
'Pping' in the Deep
Christian Science Monitor, March 25-Marine
biologist Charles Greene and more than a dozen colleagues from
across the United States are laying the groundwork for a multimillion-dollar
observatory to track whales, dolphins, tuna, marlin, sea turtles,
and a vast menagerie of other open-ocean creatures as they ply
the waters off the big island of Hawaii. The observatory would
turn up to 500 cubic kilometers (119 cubic miles) of ocean into
the world's largest aquarium and give scientists their most
comprehensive peek yet into marine life. (Quote by Jules
Jaffe, a research scientist at the Scripps
Institution of Oceanography.)
