Cancer, Inflammation Link Confirmed
Irish Health, March 3 -- An international cancer expert has confirmed the long suspected link between chronic infections and cancer and proposed that a specific gene may hold the key. His findings are to be presented to a major conference in Galway today. Dr Michael Karin is professor of pharmacology at UCSD. He is in Galway to present a paper to the annual conference of the Irish Association for Cancer Research (IACR). More

Boat Engines Cue Dinner for Sperm Whales
Miami Herald
, March 3 -- Years ago, the sound of a boat sometimes spelled death for the heavily hunted sperm whale. Now, some of them have figured out, it means dinner. Scientists recently figured out that sperm whales in the Gulf of Alaska zero in on boat engines to locate miles of fishing lines hung with valuable sablefish. (Quotes Aaron Thode, associate researcher at UCSD). More

Music Review:
A Riveting ‘Aura’ of Cambodia About It
Los Angeles Times
, Feb. 6 -- In "Aura" — which is written for two sopranos and a 10-member ensemble of woodwinds, strings and percussion — Chinary Ung has gotten past the longing for his own past. Expression is now direct and open. He will never lose sensual beauty (all his music is gorgeous), but there is more. In one section, titled "Rain of Tears," he expresses the universal sorrow of awe-inspiring floods, whether New Orleans or Banda Aceh, through chilling, clotted string melodies and the eerie whistling of the singers. (Cites UCSD professor of music Chinary Ung.) More

Robotic Underwater Gliders
Revealing Secrets of the Sea
Honolulu Advertiser
, March 3 -- Ocean scientists can now plunge into the middle of the sea without leaving their offices. Six-foot, 100-pound underwater gliders are swimming the oceans of the world and dutifully sending data home on everything from whale calls to the massive waves produced by hurricanes. (Quotes Eric Terrill, director of the Coastal Observing Research and Development Center at UCSD’s Scripps Institution of Oceanography.) More

They’re Always With Him
San Diego Union-Tribune
, March 3 -- The infinity symbol, basically a skinny 8, is tattooed across Jason Delaney's right shoulder. It's a reminder of his eight friends, his University of Wyoming cross country teammates, who were killed 41/2 years ago in a highway accident. “The worst day of my life,” Delaney says. Now a UCSD engineering graduate student, Delaney, 25, does not say the accident made him a more driven runner. Only that it gave him greater perspective. More

, March 3 -- Anti-war activist Cindy Sheehan is back in San Diego Friday to take part in a daylong peace rally at UCSD. Sheehan will speak as part of a panel discussion Friday night sponsored by the UCSD College Democrats. More
