Alzheimer's researchers see promise in gene put into mice
San Diego Union-Tribune, Mar. 27 – Gene therapy experiments in mice have reduced damaging plaques in brain tissue found in Alzheimer's disease, a discovery that could someday lead to new treatments for the devastating illness. A study involving the Salk Institute and the University of California, San Diego and the University of Kentucky suggests that transferring the gene neprilysininto the brains of people suffering from Alzheimer's may provide an effective way to treat the disease. (Quotes Eliezer Masliah, a UCSD professor of neuroscience).

Panel urges NASA to replace shuttle
Ventura County Star, Mar. 21 – Members of NASA's Advisory Council complained Thursday that the agency's decision to build an orbital space plane rather than a full-fledged replacement for the space shuttle betrayed a lack of vision for the future of the nation's space program. The council, 28 business executives, academics and others interested in space, will ultimately issue a report on the proposed space plane -- a four-passenger orbiter that would be boosted into space by an expendable rocket and is scheduled to be operational in 2012. (Quotes Dr. Larry Smarr of the University of California, San Diego and Dr. Charles F. Kennel with the Scripps Institution of Oceanography).
