Brain Evolution Studies Go Micro

Yet in recent years, a growing number of researchers have become convinced that size isn't the whole story. Work over the past decade by Katerina Semendeferi, an anthropologist at UCSD, suggests that the human frontal lobes, the seat of many advanced cognitive functions, are not proportionately larger than those of other apes. . March 2 -- By looking into the past, a researcher is trying to understand how animals might adapt to global warming now. Richard Norris of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UCSD has been studying a climate warming event of 55 million years ago. Although there seemed to be major extinctions in the deep ocean, he said, that ancient climate change wasn’t as detrimental for animals on land. More

Family Ties Bolster in 'Wakonda's Dream'

, March 2 -- It will be a family affair when UCSD music professor Anthony Davis' new opera, “Wakonda's Dream,” receives its world premiere Wednesday at the 2,600-seat Orpheum Theatre in Omaha, Neb. The ambitious piece, which was commissioned by Opera Omaha, features Davis' 9½-year-old son, Jonah, a fourth-grader at Explorer Elementary School in Point Loma. More

Dr. Seuss' Birthday

March 1 -- The cat is out of the bag. Tomorrow is the 103rd birthday of “Cat in the Hat” author Ted Geisel, aka Dr. Seuss. So UCSD is celebrating with cake for students and staff outside the Geisel Library. It's also a special occasion for the storybook “Cat in the Hat,” who turns 50 this year.  Geisel's widow, Audrey, is the guest of honor. UCSD Chancellor Marye Anne Fox will read to students at Hawthorne Elementary school in San Diego tomorrow morning – Seuss books, of course. More
