Is There Life on Mars?
MIT Technology Review, March 20 -- In 2013, a chemical detector called Urey will travel to Mars with the European Space Agency's ExoMars mission. Developed by researchers at NASA, UCSD and the University of California, Berkeley, Urey will search for chemical evidence of past or present life in the form of protein building blocks called amino acids. Urey, which will travel on a solar-powered rover, will also assess how long organic compounds can survive on the planet's harsh, dusty surface. More
Inflammation During Prostate Cancer Deadly
UPI, March 19 -- Inflammation associated with the progression of prostate cancer tumors may help the disease to spread, say California researchers. "Our findings suggest promoting inflammation of the cancerous tissue, for instance by performing prostate biopsies, may, ironically, hasten progression of metastasis," Michael Karin, professor of pharmacology at the UCSD School of Medicine, said in a statement. KPBS, March 20 -- UCSD partners with Castle Park High School to bring the latest biological research to disadvantaged students. The project is called the Bio Bridge Program. On this day, high school freshman are injecting DNA taken from jellyfish into strains of bacteria. If the students are successful, the bacteria will turn into glowing florescent proteins. More
