Governor's Plan for Higher Ed Promises to Boost Funds Later
San Diego Union-Tribune, May 12-Cutting a deal with state university officials, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger announced a plan yesterday that would give no relief to 11,300 freshmen turned away this fall, but would fund increased enrollment in the future. At a news conference with the presidents of the University of California and California State University, Schwarzenegger said he expects that parts of the agreements will be criticized. He said he wants to bring in the Legislature as "partners" to complete the agreements.

The Superwoman of Supercomputing
Business Week, May 12-Francine Berman is the reigning teraflop queen. As director of the San Diego Supercomputing Center, she's the top executive in a 400-person organization housed at the University of California, San Diego, that programs and maintains a machine called DataStar. Built by IBM, DataStar can whip through approximately 10 trillion calculations per second, ranking it among the 20 most powerful supercomputers in the world.

'Wicked' Tops the List with 10 Tony Nominations
Los Angeles Times, May 11-Jefferson Mays, critically lauded for his handling of 30-plus roles in "I Am My Own Wife," the story of an openly gay transvestite who survived the Nazis and the communists in East Berlin, is nominated for Tony as best actor . The UC San Diego drama school graduate is taking on bigger names: Christopher Plummer, Kevin Kline, Frank Langella and Simon Russell Beale.

Advocates Cite Increase in Illegal Immigrant Sweeps
North County Times, May 11-The U.S Border Patrol has recently stepped up 'sweeps' on trains and buses around San Diego County aimed at capturing illegal immigrants, officials said Tuesday. Immigration-rights advocates charge that the Border Patrol has also conducted more sweeps around supermarkets, swap meets and other areas in predominantly Latino neighborhoods.
