Vaccination Halts Progression Of Atherosclerosis In Animal Studies, UCSD Researchers Report
ScienceDaily, May 13 – New research conducted in mice at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine indicates that a type of vaccine for pneumonia also triggers elements of the immune system to reduce atherosclerosis, the build-up of fatty deposits and chronic inflammation in blood vessels which leads to heart attacks and stroke. The study's first author, Christoph J. Binder, a post-doctoral researcher in the lab of co-senior author Joseph Witztum, said "the test of pneumococcal vaccination grew from the team's study of immune responses against oxidized low-density lipoproteins, the 'bad' cholesterol that leads to plaque build-up in arteries." Witztum collaborated with UCSD professor of medicine Daniel Steinberg and co-senior author Gregg Silverman in this research. (Mentions UCSD’s Asheesh Dewan, Wulf Palinski, Carl S. Goodyear, and Peter S. Shaw).

Saving water doesn't make you all wet
Chicago Sun-Times, May 9 – Columnist Rick Telander believes that water is a threatened commodity. According to more and more reports, pollution, waste, mismanagement and possible terrorist sabotage of the earth's ground water may be about to cause a major global crisis with ramifications for all. Researchers at Scripps Institution of Oceanography in San Diego predict our Western states will become so dry that as much as 30 percent of their usable water will vanish by 2050. ''This is just one study where we didn't find anything good,'' Scripps marine physicist Tim Barnett told USA Today. ''It's a train wreck.''

Ski resorts, water supply could be threatened
Tahoe Daily Tribune, May 9 – Due to a combination of global warming and natural causes, Western North America has been getting warmer for the past 50 years. While it's doubtful the day would come when the Sierra sees no snow, the warming trend does have serious implications for California's water supply and ski resorts. The Squaw Valley Institute had its fourth in a series of environmental programs this week and Dan Cayan, director of the Climate Research Institute at Scripps Institution of Oceanography, was one of the presenters on the long-range impact of global warming on the Sierra Nevada's snowpack study.
